Landmark, Carrfour Celebrate Grand Opening of $21M Redeveloped Affordable Housing Community

Miami—Real estate developer Landmark Development and nonprofit affordable housing developer Carrfour Supportive Housing celebrated the grand opening of a 1950s-era, 100-unit redeveloped affordable housing community in Miami’s underserved Brownsville neighborhood on June 26. The ceremony was attended by several elected and government officials including Commissioner Audrey Edmonson and Deputy Mayor Russell Benford.
The community, Hampton Village Apartments, received a $21 million makeover that was funded primarily by locally-allocated federal stimulus money through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Neighborhood Stabilization Program, which is an initiative designed to revitalize neighborhoods through the renovation and reactivation of recession-era properties that had been foreclosed on or abandoned.
“Rather than being an eyesore to the neighborhood, Hampton village is now a beautiful apartment building that residents can feel proud of,” says Stephanie Berman, president of Carrfour Supportive Housing. “The complete redevelopment of this building signals new beginning for these Miami families. In addition to bringing much needed quality affordable housing to the area, Carrfour is also providing on-site services at Hampton Village aimed at putting unemployed residents back to work. We are not only rebuilding apartments, we are rebuilding lives.”
Located at 2800 NW 43rd Terrace in Central Miami-Dade, the community’s 100 newly renovated units will allow for up to 250 low-income residents and are available to families earning at or below 60 percent of the area’s annual median income, which means a single person would qualify if their income was $31,560 or less.
The community is next to the historic Hampton House Hotel, which saw the likes of prominent African Americans during the last days of segregation. Some of those folks included Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali), Malcom X, Martin Luther King Jr., Sammy Davis Jr., Sam Cooke and Nat King Cole.
“Landmark is proud to have partnered with Carrfour Supportive Housing on this project,” says Francisco Rojo, vice president of Landmark Development. “Miami’s Brownsville neighborhood is a historic district filled with significant landmarks such as the Historic Hampton House Museum and Jazz Center, and projects like Hampton Village are helping to revitalize this unique area within Miami.”
